15 Ideas to Create the Perfect Montessori Inspired Toddler Bedroom

Is your toddler sneaking into your bed at 3 a.m. every night? I'm right there with ya, mama. While it's nice to have those snuggles once in a while it's also nice to have a full night's rest.

One way to keep your toddler cozy and asleep throughout the night is to create a calming bedroom for your toddler update feel completely safe and relaxed in.

Plus, with these Montessori-inspired bedroom ideas, you can help empower your toddlers to be independent and build their confidence.

Today I'm sharing 15 ideas to create the perfect Montessori toddler room that I have used with my own 2 little nuggets. And to be honest I'm so in love with their room I don't mind when they ask me to lay with them and read “ just one more book” for bedtime (and possibly falling asleep beside them…. because it's so dang calming).

I say Montessori-inspired because I like to use Montessori ideas in my parenting style, but I also create it around our own family’s dynamic and parenting style as well. You can use these toddler Montessori-inspired ideas for your kiddo’s room, but don’t be afraid to decorate it how you feel fit for your peanuts too.

  1. Keep your Montessori toddler bedroom minimal

My kid's room only has a couple of pieces of furniture and not too much else.  we store the toys away and all the little knick-knacks we do without.  When the room isn’t cluttered with things, it feels so much nicer laying in bed and the air smells cleaner because we can easily clean the room more efficiently like sweeping and dusting regularly. Also, the fewer the things, the easier it is to clean up. This brings me to my next point.

2. Keep it clean

As an adult, I always feel calmer when my environment and the space around me is clean. And I feel like it's the same with kids, especially toddlers.  When there is so much chaos and toys and clothes all over the place I find that my kids are a little bit rowdier and they honestly don't know what to do with themselves.

This just causes stress and chaos,  which we were trying to avoid whether it's right before bedtime or nap time. I'll either pick up their room during the day or invite them to help me pick it up before bedtime just so everyone feels lighter and happier.

3. Choose wooden furniture - a Montessori toddler room must

This is a must for creating a Montessori toddler room. Bringing any type of nature into your toddler's bedroom will help your toddler feel a sense of calmness since nature tends to promote relaxation.  One of the best ways to do this is to choose wooden furniture for your toddler's bedroom and ditch the metal or plastic material.

I also recommend getting a bed that your kiddos can easily climb in and out, that doesn’t require you to attend to them. This encourages freedom of movement, independence, and mobility.

4. Salt rock lamp for soft lighting

I absolutely love Salt Rock lamps around my home. I even have one in my own room.  Salt Rock lamps give off a very calming ambiance,  especially compared to some of the bright night lights that are on the market.

Not only do salt rock lamps just make you feel better, some say the salt rock lamps purify the air and provide health benefits such as lifting your mood, enhancing sleep, and improving breathing conditions. That sounds much better than a bright night light doesn't it? And a lot of the Salt Rock lamps are adjustable so you can adjust how bright or dim your kid’s room is.

5. Sound machine/white noise

The soothing sounds of waves lapping, the dripping of rain on roof play, sweet lullabies can quickly put a child into a deep sleep (and a mama too!)

6. Keep the majority of toys hidden

I keep all of the kids toys in either the playroom or I have a couple of baskets in our main living room. Keeping the toys out of their bedroom is such a great idea because it keeps their room clean, and just keeps their bedroom a space they associate with relaxing, not getting riled up, ready to play.

I may keep 3 or so toys by the bookshelf if they decide they want to play during quiet/nap time. These toys are also ones that are wooden or don’t have brightly colored and loud sounds coming from them. This helps to encourage them to use their imagination which is vital for development!

7. Front facing bookshelf / reading nook

I don't keep many toys in their bedroom, but I do keep a little bookshelf in their Montessori inspired room because I feel like when they read, this is a way for them to calm down. Plus, I like having the front-facing shelves to encourage them to go over and read by themselves.

You can even create a little cozy reading nook with soft blankets and fairy lights so they can go in there before bedtime or during quiet time.

8. Calming paint colors

When picking paint colors, I definitely recommend choosing a neutral or a pale color over brightly wild and crazy colors. Those bright colors can signal to them that it’s go-time and to increase their energy, while calming colors like tan, off white, and pale green signal “hey, it’s time to, calm down, and get ready for bed.”

9. Keep the air fresh, open windows

No one likes a stuffy room. It makes it hard to breathe at night and it just feels icky. One of my favorite ways to create calmness in my toddler's Montessori room is to let in some fresh air.

I don't know what feels better than having the windows open on a nice spring day during nap time or during a warm summer’s night with the crickets chirping outside.

What I do is open the top part of the window instead of the bottom section for extra safety with the kiddos.

10. The coziest blankets of all time, neutral colors

I don't know about you but I love cozying up with a soft blanket and I know my little kiddos love it too.  we all have our favorites off blankie copy use. There's just something about a cozy blanket cuddled around you that allows your body to feel safe and be calm. *This is only if your child is old enough that it won’t pose a health threat. This is for older toddlers only.

11. Favorite stuffed animal

What's more calming than cuddling up with your favorite stuffed animal (okay, maybe mama…)? My only tip here is to only allow 1-3 stuffed animals in bed. You don't want their bed to be covered,  interfering with their sleep. *Again, this is only if your child is old enough that it won’t pose a health threat. This is for older toddlers only

12. Photographs of nature or family

As I stated before,  try to bring nature into the bedroom as much as you can. This can be with either live plants or photographs of nature. This can help calm them and help them pay attention to the details of the beauty around us. Also, familiar faces are nice. Family photos are a great way to decorate your toddler’s Montessori-inspired bedroom.

13. Toddler Wardrobe

I don't know how many times I tried to clean out my drawers or clothes pile up right beside the doors because they get overloaded with clothes. If I can't keep my drawers clean I can't expect my toddler to either.

Keep the amount of clothes to a minimum and ditch the drawers and keep a wardrobe or store the clothes in the closet to help keep the room nice and tidy. Because again a nice clean room helps calm the body.

Keeping a small wardrobe that is easily accessible to your kids can help them feel encouraged and inspired to get dressed themselves. They can happily pick out their pajamas without causing a fight right before bedtime. When they have a choice, they will feel more inclined to go with the bedtime routine.

I love this about the Montessori approach to parenting…raising confident and independent kids will help them feel confident and empowered as they grow up.

14. Essential oil diffuser (on a high shelf) with high-quality oils

Keep it essential oil diffuser on a high shelf and put in calming high-quality oils at bedtime.  This can help them calm down relax and sleep better. The best oils to help your toddler sleep are lavender.

15. Enter into the room in a calm manner before bedtime

One of the biggest tips to create a calming bedroom for your toddler is to enter into the room in a calming manner.  Develop a calming bedtime routine for your toddler. Maybe a warm bath with calming essential oils like rose and lavender can help them get all the jitters out.  Talk in a calm and low voice to signal that it's time to wind down.

I hope these tips help you create a calming Montesorri inspired toddle bedroom that will also encourage their independence and confidence. And help keep those Rascals in bed longer and help them calm down when it is time to go to bed… not 2 hours after bedtime.
